A little bit about us

Thanks for stopping by to learn a little bit more about us. We are the Hendricks family, and if you're visiting, you may have been personally invited, recieved what we call a "Pass Along Card" from either my wife or myself, or have just happened upon our little corner of the internet. However you found us, we hope that you enjoy your visit here, and know that you were invited here in the spirit of brotherly kindness. If you were invited here, it means we esteem you greatly, and you're important enough to us for us to share with you what has brought us so much joy. My family belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but you probably are more familiar with the term Mormons (which is just fine by us!). I've designed this site to be a place for us to share our experiences, beliefs, and feelings with you, and for you to ask any question that you would like of us.

A new way to strive to be better

I think one of the overriding principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ is to improve ourselves daily. At its most fundamental level, repentance is nothing more than getting rid of habits and attitudes that are detrimental to our salvation, and saying we won't do them anymore. But what do we replace all that negativity with?

A good friend of mine introduced me to what I think is quite a remarkable website called 43things.com. You can make a list of 39 things (just kidding) 43 goals that you would like to attain, write about your experiences, and dish out or recieve encouragement for your goals. Blogging about my goal to read the standard works has done wonders, so I think that this 43things site might be just what the doctor ordered. You can view my 43 things at:

Thanks to Jamie Huston for turning me to this website.

A new goal.

This seemed as appropriate a place as any to mark a new goal that I have. Because of new responsibilities I have taken on at church, I've felt an increased need to be more spiritual, a goal that, really, shouldn't need a reason. My goal is to read all of the standard works of the LDS church in a year. To anyone who is reading this because you recieved a passalong card from me, there are four standard works, or accepted books of scripture for Mormons. The Bible, The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. My goal is a bit of a cheat, because I'm starting from where I'm already at in the Book of Mormon (which is about halfway through, too many people start over) and it basically equates to five chapters a day, regardless of chapter length.

Well, my head is swimming over the ramifications, but I'm excited to do this. I've read The Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants, but I've never made it all the way through The Bible. I'm looking forward to checking in here periodically to share some of my thoughts as I complete this goal.

If anyone else is thinking about setting a goal for scripture reading, I found a helpful article at the link below to calculate goals. Of course, I'll count it a major victory if I'm able to complete this goal even earlier!

Good luck with your own goals as well!
